One of the most critical factors affecting pump life is pump speed. The faster the pump speed the shorter the pump life. This is one of the most important factors in determining the maximum projected pump life. In an abrasion application where corrosion is not a factor then slower pump speeds are very beneficial. If a corrosion condition is present then speed may be less of a factor.

Many times the end user can provide useful information in selecting the proper materials in a given application by providing a list of materials which have failed as well as any information on materials which have proven successful. Many times a starting point is more valuable than starting from scratch. When there is no information available then it becomes a trial and error process.

Another aspect of material selection which is very important is the ultimate requirement of the application. Does the end user want a short term solution or a long term solution. If a long term solution is required then a different approach to the final material may be required.
A Nominal material composition for the three materials discussed is presented as an aide to material selection.
